Stockholm-based Lovable, a platform that enables anyone to create software, announced that it closed a $7.5M (approximately €6.83M) pre-seed funding round.
The round was led by Hummingbird and byFounders along with Deepmind angel operators, AI founders, and investors including Mattias Miksche and Bjarke Klinge Staun, Siavash Ghorbani (Shopify), Fredrik Hjelm (Voi), and Creandum co-founder Stefan Lindeberg.
Firat Ileri, Partner at Hummingbird, says, “Lovable is entering the market at a crucial time when the demand for software development far outpaces the available talent. Web apps make up 80 per cent of the software we interact with today, yet only a small minority of people can build them.”
“While a handful of companies focus on creating AI coding assistants for software engineers, Lovable’s GPT Engineer is the only one allowing non-technical people to produce the same results. Their vision, combined with their focus on reliability and real-world impact, has the potential to trigger unprecedented levels of innovation across various industries – and for thousands of people – and we’re really excited to be part of it.”
Besides the funding, the Swedish company also launched its beta product, GPT Engineer, which gained hundreds of paying users overnight.
What is GPT Engineer?
Lovable’s GPT Engineer is an AI coding tool, that generates production-ready code in real-time, enabling users to quickly build functional web apps. Unlike other AI solutions, GPT Engineer offers instant feedback, supporting both beginners and experienced developers.
It employs customised Large Language Models from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, featuring advanced reasoning and vision capabilities.
GPT Engineer autonomously creates, debugs, and maintains application integrity, recognising user intent and knowing when to request input for complex projects.
Capital utilisation
The funds will help Lovable attract top European talent to its team, which includes International Olympiad in Informatics gold medalists and senior ex-scaleup operators. Additionally, it will be used for computing resources and data collection and refinement.
Anton Osika, co-founder of Lovable, says, “We want to expand the world’s coding capabilities beyond the current 1 per cent of the population who can programme and make software more accessible as a result.”
“This is already happening: Simon, one of our early users, has created the first version of his SaaS startup, while another one of our users, Katrin, decided to take a sabbatical from their job to pursue new business ideas after having developed a sophisticated application.”
“Users love GPT Engineer because it’s like having a super senior developer sharing their tricks with them. It allows them to build startups in a week, create beautiful UIs instantly, and integrate with backends very easily. Our users tell us all the time that they are amazed by how quickly they can go from idea to functional app, whether they’re technical founders or those without coding experience.”
“This funding will help us take the company towards a future where we can take on large-scale development while our users only have to focus on being creative and enjoying themselves,” adds Osika.
Brief about Lovable
Lovable is developing autonomous software engineers powered by Large Multimodal Models, enabling anyone to create, deploy, and refine software independently.
Founded by Anton Osika and Fabian Hedin, Lovable aims to democratise access to advanced product development capabilities typically reserved for top technology companies.
Osika, who co-founded the Stockholm AI community and Depict.ai, brings extensive AI experience, while Hedin, a seasoned entrepreneur, has worked on technology projects, including Stephen Hawking’s computer interface.
Lovable’s platform has generated significant interest, with over 27,000 individuals on the waitlist and 52,000 GitHub stars for its open-source Command Line Interface (CLI) version.
