OASYS NOW

Delft-based OASYS NOW, the EU’s first AI-powered patient recruitment platform, has been announced as the winner of Slush 100 after pitching live on the international summit’s Startup Stage.

The Dutch company wins €1M equity investment from two of Europe’s most prominent early-stage venture funds: General Catalyst and Cherry Ventures.

Additionally, the company will also get hands-on mentoring from industry leaders to scale up its personalised, patient-centric health platform.

The other two startups that made it made it to the final 3 were Ireland’s Dev Ally (a self-serve digital accessibility platform designed to help organisations tackle compliance) and Montreal-based Mohana (a precision platform to help women reduce the time and effort required to detect, understand, and act on hormonal imbalances).

OASYS NOW: Streamlines trial matching process

Founded by Nima Salami and Sara Okhuijsen, OASYS NOW claims to play a pivotal role in addressing a crucial challenge faced by drug development companies—identifying suitable candidates for clinical trials and research studies.

This is significant for patients with life-threatening chronic and rare diseases who need timely access to new treatment options.

Currently, the process of matching patients with appropriate treatments is manual, laborious, and inefficient, costing drug research organisations millions of euros and, unfortunately, precious lives every year.

OASYS aims to revolutionise this process, bringing efficiency to drug development and potentially saving lives by providing timely access to new treatment options.

The company focuses on cardiology, rare diseases, and chronic illnesses. It has created an AI-based platform that helps hospitals, doctors, and research nurses find patients eligible for clinical trials.

The company is building the EU’s first AI-powered Patient Recruitment platform for Clinical Trials. It consists of two main products:

GRIP App: The GRIP app helps users take control of their health data. It provides personal health insights and helps users find clinical trials that match their needs, enabling them to receive treatments more quickly.

ELaiGIBLE Platform: The ELaiGIBLE platform accelerates the process of identifying eligible patients for clinical trials. It reduces the time needed from months to just minutes for hospitals, clinics, and research organisations.

This year, four Dutch technical universities (4TU) are travelling to Helsinki to visit Slush with their startups and spin-offs, together with the rest of the Dutch delegation, which consists of 25 startups with the slogan ‘Dutch at Slush’.

The four universities include:

  • TU Delft
  • TU Eindhoven
  • University of Twente
  • Wageningen University & Research

In addition to attending the conference, they can connect with investors and other relevant people during side events.

One of the most visited side events of the 4TU is the (Deep) Tech Drinks.

4TU will take over the Wallis Karaoke Bar in Helsinki’s harbour in the evening. Several renowned VCs are invited and asked to pick one of the startups from the Discovery Deck.

Below are some of the startups that are looking to raise funds. Notably, these four companies are part of a larger 4TU delegation comprising 25 startups in total.

Villari

Founder/s: Olivier Baas

HQ: Delft

Spin off of TU Delft

Founded in 2019, Villari was built on previous investments by Delft Enterprises and business angel David Cerda Salzmann and with support from the proof-of-concept fund UNIIQ.

Villari has developed sensor tech that detects tiny fractures or “fatigue cracks” in steel structures, crucial for heavily loaded assets like bridges and industrial cranes. This ensures safety by closely monitoring structural integrity.

The company’s sensor solution is patented and has already been installed for several customers, including bridges owned by the Dutch Government and several industrial cranes at harbours and steel manufacturing sites in Europe.

Time Travelling Milkman

Founder/s: Dimitris Karefyllakis, Saskia Tersteeg and Costas Nikiforidis

HQ: Wageningen

Spin-off of Wageningen University & Research (WUR)

Time-travelling Milkman (TTM) has a mission to provide a healthy alternative to traditional dairy products.

The company aims to improve plant-based dairy options, which often lack the taste and texture consumers want. TTM focuses on making creamier products that fit into food culture.

Using a patented process, the Dutch company turns plant seeds into Oleocream, which mimics the creaminess of dairy cream.

TTM produces nutritious fat ingredients through a process that extracts natural fat droplets, known as Oleosomes, from seeds.

These Oleosomes function similarly to milk fat droplets and allow Oleocream to be used as a dairy cream substitute in creamy and delicious products, with minimal environmental impact.

Phos4nova

Founder/s: Dr. Olga Koshkina, Dr. Timo Rheinberger and Prof. Dr. Frederik Wurm

HQ: Enschede

Spin off of University of Twente

Phos4nova specialises in the development of PPE technology and is their sole commercial provider.

PPEs are biocompatible and biodegradable polymers inspired by natural phosphorus-based molecules such as RNA and ATP.

Their adaptable chemistry allows for customisation properties suitable for diverse applications.

The company’s lead product — Phos4MR is a polymer formulation traceable with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) without toxic or persistent substances, such as heavy-metal chelates, ensuring safety and sustainability.

XMEM

CEO: Arash Rahimali Mamaghani

HQ: Eindhoven

Spin off of TU Eindhoven

XMEM focuses on researching, developing, producing, and distributing advanced inorganic membranes, including carbon-based membranes, membrane modules, membrane reactors, Membrane-based separation-reaction pilots and systems.

The company aims to enhance the integration of processes that separate and react gases, liquids, and solids.

The company is on a mission to transform industrial efficiency and sustainability with advanced, tailor-made membrane solutions.

Naya

Groningen-based Naya, a developer of a modular ergonomic keyboard, Naya Create, announced on Tuesday that it has secured €2M investment from G-Force Capital along with a large group of other investors, including NOM.

NOM is the regional development agency for the Northern Netherlands. The platform invests in promising new and existing businesses, attracts direct foreign investment, and develops innovative business networks.

In addition to the financial support, G-Force Capital is also providing Naya with access to a broad network and essential knowledge to help bring their product to the global market.

The company will use the funds to focus on expanding its sales channels through e-commerce and partnerships with retailers.

Niclas Bertelsen, co-founder of Naya, says, “The next step is to develop a broader ecosystem. Our expertise in AI offers opportunities to further optimise digital workflows. We are passionate about both hardware and software, and we want to merge these to continue offering innovative solutions.”

The announcement comes a year after raising €500K in just five minutes through a Kickstarter campaign in 2023.

The first deliveries are expected by the end of 2024.

Naya: Modular keyboard for creators

Naya was founded by Moritz Angermann, Tom Theuer, and Niclas Bertelsen, who met during their AI studies at the University of Groningen.

In an attempt to boost productivity and prevent physical strain, the Dutch startup has developed a modular keyboard specifically designed for creative professionals.

Niclas Bertelsen, co-founder of Naya, explains: “While software and hardware like chips and screens are evolving at a rapid pace, keyboards have remained unchanged for years. With the rise of an increasingly multidimensional digital world, from text to video and 3D design,

there was a clear need for a keyboard that could keep up with this evolution.”

The investor

G-Force Capital is an independent private investment office focused on growing businesses.

The company connects capital to early-stage listed businesses and guides them through their equity capital market journey.

The investment company supports capital raises of varying sizes and structures across a range of sectors, including mining, oil, and gas (E&P), other natural resources, and technology.

Niek from G-Force Capital says, “Naya offers a fresh, innovative perspective on a product we use daily but rarely think about. The potential for productivity improvement is enormous, and their pitch was compelling. For those who value efficiency in their workflow, this is a true game changer.”

TechVillage

Are you an investor or a startup founder? Do you like to get your hands dirty and explore new cultures, cuisines, and wines while creating opportunities and meaningful interactions?

After four years of pause, TechVillage is back in the picturesque village of Butuceni, Moldova.

What is TechVillage?

TechVillage is a three-day startup event offering a blend of business interaction, deal-making, adventure, cultural fusion, and outdoor networking.

Scheduled between September 6 – 8, the event will take place in Butuceni, one of the most beautiful villages in the Republic of Moldova.

Here are a few reasons why you should attend the TechVillage event.

#1 Discover and invest in Rising CEE Startups

The startup ecosystem in Moldova and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is developing and growing. New startups are being launched, while others are expanding into international markets.

To reach their full potential, these startups require assistance and investments. This event aims to discover talents from CEE and assist startup founders in securing funding.

By participating, you can contribute to the growth of the first Moldovan unicorn. Creating two unicorns by 2030 is one of the Republic of Moldova’s goals outlined in the National Strategy for Digital Transformation.

Also, Moldova IT Park offers the most optimal taxation level in Central and Eastern Europe.

With a single tax rate of 7 per cent on sales income, which replaces all tax payments owed by the company and employees, the resident company is exempt from corporate income tax, any payroll taxes owed by the employee and employer, local taxes, property taxes, and road taxes.

#2 The return of TechVillage

The event aims to gather 50 international investors and 50 business founders from CEE countries (Romania, Ukraine, and Moldova) to transform the CEE startup ecosystem and revitalise rural Moldova.

It is targeted at angel investors and pre-seed investors ready to commit between $50,000 and $200,000 to promising startups.

#3 Unique setup

Butuceni, one of Moldova’s most beautiful villages, will serve as the venue for TechVillage. This idyllic rural setting provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Imagine trading fancy hotels and conference rooms for meetings under a tree, campfire talks, and networking on the hills.

The idea is to blend relaxation and foster deeper connections among participants through a unique environment setup.

#4 Boosting the rural economy

During the three-day event, participants will engage in various cultural and nature-based activities, including village quests, wine tasting, and trying traditional cuisine.

The event is an unconference type that’s focused on interaction between participants rather than sitting through speeches and panel discussions under roofs and walls.

#5 Quality over quantity

TechVillage prides itself on its curated selection of participants and event formats.

The program will include one-on-one sessions, a pitching marathon, and other deal-making activities.

“We focus on quality, that’s why to ensure good matchmaking between the startups and investors, all applicants will go through a selection process before payment,” says TechVillage’s website.

#6 Resurrecting Moldovan villages

Severe demographic and economic problems characterise the rural areas in Moldova. A trend of mass population exodus has left numerous villages desolated and forgotten.

As a result, the TechVillage event in Butuceni is an attempt to help resurrect Moldovan villages.

More events like TechVillage will bring business to the rural areas and help them develop and maintain their demographics.

Gerard & Anton Awards 2024

The Gerard & Anton Awards, the annual election of the ten most promising startups in the Brainport Eindhoven region, announced on Wednesday, July 3, the winners of the tenth edition at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven.

The event drew over 300 attendees, making it the largest to date.

According to the award organisers, out of the 100 (former) winners of this award, 85 startups are still active. 7 have been acquired by other companies and only 8 have had to cease operations.

During the presentation, Beatrix Bos and Bert-Jan Woertman, the event’s presenters, highlighted the importance of refocusing attention on the startup community following the recent focus on Project Beethoven.

They state, “We have rightly had a lot of attention in recent months on the content and consequences of Project Beethoven. But now it’s time for that composer’s andante to be followed by the allegro of the startup community!”

The 10 (+1) winners were selected from a longlist of over seventy candidates.

“At least half of them could have been on stage as well,” says jury chairman Stijn Steenbakkers.

The winners of the 10th edition Gerard & Anton Awards are:

Vitalfluid

Based at the Eindhoven University of Technology, VitalFluid is working on developing a new and sustainable method for fertilisation and an alternative to chemical pesticides in greenhouse farming.
